Without a doubt, ULVER has changed the most. They started out as a harsh black metal band, but now they play electronic elevator music (at least that is what I call that techno mess). |

AFI most definitely. When they started out they were making average punk rock music. Their first 2 albums sounded like that. Then their third was more hardcore. But with their fourth their sound and lyrics got a lot darker and that carried on onto their fifth album. And with their sixth released last year 'Sing The Sorrow' they took that dark punk rock (or whatever you want to call it) and changed it into something unlike any other band I've heard. I believe they truly have their own sound now and it could never be compared to their first 2 albums. It's hard to believe it's the same band.
Anyway, other bands are Anathema, Tiamat, and Paradise Lost. All started out doing sort of doom metal but they've mellowed out a lot over the years. I prefer their mellower side. |

| i don't know cos I haven't listen many bands i listen to now for long. but The Rasmus, their music was... hmmm... it was so happy and they had... gosh, my english is awful i cannot describe this... go to download Funky Jam and you'll know...but they're still pretty a pop band, maybe (surely) they'll change their music darker way. |

the goo goo dolls - if anyone know them ... they were "funny" - at least their music was funny in earlier days ... now they're more serious - i like the newer stuff more than their older ...
@tiina ... the rasmus came to my mind aswell ... |

Around what time are you talking about? I know they became huge when that song "Name" came out but that they had been playing music and putting out cds long before that.
Actually a band that has to be mentioned is Sugar Ray. Their 1995 cd was a mixture of metal, punk, and alternative rock but it didn't do to well. Then later they had a huge hit with the song "Fly" and they decided that they would rather be a successful band so they began churning out "Fly" like songs and became huge. All their songs after that sounded the same and they even admit it. That's probably what bothers me the most, that they admit to compromising their music for the sake of popularity.

metallica has been through SO MANY phases in their long career. they're the masters of their craft, but man, they really aren't good anymore.  yet i still keep buying their albums...

@silvery, I don't own any of their cds although I did like most of the singles that were released. I did notice that after a while their songs sounded a lot alike. It seemed like they were following the same formula for each song. I liked all the singles off Dizzy up the Girl, I was even going to buy it but I never got around to it. I listened to Gutterflower in the music store where I worked and I wasn't too impressed with it.
I guess to some fans who've been listening a long time, Entwine would have changed their sound quite a bit. They started off as a death metal band no? But that was before their current line up of members. The last three cds have not differed dramatically from one another.

The thing is just that Kaamos (how the band was called.. nothing to do with nowadays Kaamos from Sweden..) was a totally different band. Sure Aksu and Tom were playing there (Tom was also doing the growling vocals there btw, hehe.. sounded quite cool  ). They are the ones who put up Entwine and who are kind of "the heart" of the band so I suppose Kaamos is where it started. Still imo you shouldn't compare those two bands because otherwise they wouldn't have changed the name, the music style and actually the whole concept (Kaamos was a three-men-band).
Entwine do sound different nowadays than on TwH but I'd rather call that "progress" than "change". I suppose a lot of bands do progress and actually that is good since there are only very few bands who can make the same album over and over again and still be successfull with it (I won't mention any names here for I might get stoned to death by some people *gg*).
Of the bands I have in my collection I think the ones who changed their style the most are Metallica,Tiamat, Paradise Lost, Anathema and Samael (especially what I heard of the new album). Actually some of the mentioned bands (especially Metallica) should have thought about changing their band name long ago for the sake of their past and the good stuff they did..

oh oops! I'm not up on my history of the band before "Gone". I just remembered reading somewhere, I think it was allmusic.com, that that was how they started off. But yeah, I meant to say before that was before the other member joined. I didn't know that they went by a different name. I like the band how they are now although it would be interesting to hear some really early stuff.
That's interesting that you say that some bands should have changed their names a long time ago because they are really not the same musically. And then there are those bands who do change their names but still put out the same style albums.
